Thank you for visiting my website.
I began to study watercolor painting at about age 15 when a kindly older lady at the old St. Paul Book and Stationary on Wabasha gave me a bunch of sample tubes of watercolor paint and a cracked mixing tray. They were pretty good paints and I am still using one of them to this day! I put them to use copying paintings from books I got at the Library. I attended the Univ. of Minnesota, Morris in western Minnesota. Although I did not get a degree in art I took a great many art classes taught by a very fine still life watercolorist named John Stuart Ingle. After college I painted off and on with watercolors and progressed slowly. Over the years there was one watercolorist who's work really intrigued me whenever I visited his gallery in Grand Marais. His name was Howard Sivertson and in 2010 I was able to study 60 hours under him at the Grand Marais Art Colony. Howard's style and subject matter (Lake Superior and the BWCA area) were in exactly the direction I wanted to go with my work so I learned very quickly. Howard uses the wet-in-wet technique and is a master of it. I still have a lot to learn but with Howard's help I reached a higher level of proficiency in the medium. Howard is still going strong at age 80! Most of the smaller watercolors, which run about 12" X 16", were done "Plein Air" (meaning "in the open air") style. It is fun and a challenge to paint Plein Air because you are out in the elements you are trying to paint, but you have to work quickly before the sunlight or conditions change on you. The larger watercolors which run about !5" X 22" are mostly done in the studio using the wet-in-wet technique. Please stop in at my site again soon as I update it with new work often. To inquire about a piece or to be put on my email list you can email me at [email protected] or phone 612-724-0542. About once a month I send out an email with photos of a couple of new work I have recently completed. Send me your email address if you want to be put on the list . Thank you. |
